PROOFREADING

Proofreading occurs when copyediting is finished and you have proofs in hand! A proof is a copy of your work that has already been edited and formatted.

Proofreading is the last step in the editing process, where the editor makes sure everything is perfect: from headings, page numbers, and special figures to double checking where words fall on the page. The only changes made are to egregious grammatical errors, spelling errors, and other issues that can pop up during the formatting process.

Files for proofreading should be already formatted on hard copy, or in Adobe Acrobat.

If you aren't sure if you need a copyedit or proofread, send an email to quinnmillermurphy@gmail.com for clarification!

COPYEDITING

COPYEDITING
Light Copyedit:
The editor fixes obvious grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Any other changes to wordiness or clarity will be sent as a query to the author, who is then able to make alterations on their own.

Medium Copyedit:
The editor fixes obvious grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Changes to the text are more likely, as the editor aims to fix wordy sentences and streamline word-choice/aesthetic decisions.

Heavy Copyedit:
The editor fixes obvious grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. The editor also takes more liberty in changing sentence structure and word-choice. *A heavy copyedit may also mean the content is more dense (academic papers, for example) and will require longer to work through.

Files should be on hard copy, in Word, or in Adobe Acrobat.

Not sure which level of copyediting you are hoping for? No problem! Feel free to email me with any questions.
